For a long time, concrete has been typecast as a purely structural material for infrastructure — heavy, cold, rough and rigid. This deep‑rooted stereotype persists among the public.
Yet amid evolving design practices and material innovation, concrete has long broken free from its role merely as a structural building material. Boasting high plasticity and processing adaptability, it has become a core medium for conceptual breakthroughs and value regeneration in product design.

The continuous wave of technological advancement is reshaping concrete’s developmental path. From a critical perspective, BENTU has always re‑examined concrete — the most humble yet vital traditional material.

Rapid advances in materials science and manufacturing technology keep unlocking new functional and expressive dimensions for concrete. Breakthroughs in composite and modified materials have infused this age‑old building material with unprecedented creative vitality, among which translucent concrete stands as one key exploration outcome.

Translucent concrete is fabricated with fine‑grained concrete as its base, reinforced with optical glass fibres. Thousands of optical fibres are arranged in a regular matrix, running parallel through both faces of the block. Leveraging the physical light‑conducting properties of fibres, light penetrates smoothly through the concrete surface.
Externally, it retains the plain, serene texture of homogeneous concrete, while internally it features light‑transmitting properties, striking a balance between solid texture and flowing light — challenging the common perception that concrete is “opaque and lifeless.”

In current industry practice, the value potential of translucent concrete remains largely underestimated. Most applications are limited to construction‑related fields such as exterior decoration and landscape facades, featuring single‑purpose use and rigid expression confined to superficial decorative functions.
In home product design, a sector closely linked to daily life, translucent concrete is still largely an untapped field.

With years of research into waste‑residue regeneration and cement‑based materials, BENTU consistently pursues sustainable design practices.
We focus on various solid wastes generated from daily life and industrial production, conducting cross‑disciplinary R&D based on cement. On one hand, we explore the application of solid‑waste aggregates; on the other, we refine manufacturing processes through repeated trials and iterations. Extensive practical experience has been accumulated in material proportioning, pouring and moulding, texture regulation and performance optimization, laying a solid process foundation for cross‑disciplinary applications of new materials.

Integrating the unique material properties and fabrication logic of translucent concrete into home product design for innovative reconstruction embodies BENTU’s long‑held design philosophy and experimental spirit.
Through continuous material testing and process trial‑and‑error,we explore the integration of translucent concrete with everyday objects.Drawing on its distinctive light‑conducting principle and luminous texture, we reshape the form and temperament of daily objects with imaginative and exploratory expressions, pursuing diverse design possibilities.

When translucent concrete shifts from large‑scale architectural contexts to everyday product design,it essentially brings material expression closer to human perception for renewed interpretation.
Textures, light and shadow once concealed within building facades are condensed into household objects, combining the solid stability of stone with the gentle fluidity of light.
Meanwhile, this cross‑disciplinary transformation enables translucent concrete to redefine its value, dispelling long‑standing public prejudices against concrete and expanding the freedom of its design language and application scenarios.
